Altercation at Grocery Store

I’m so mad right now. I had a great weekend that I would love to tell you about, but what started off as a craving for homemade tacos and going for a few groceries today ended up as a 911 call at the grocery store and me giving someone a super supreme earful.

As I headed out to my car with the groceries, I noticed the car parked next to me. It was nothing special, but it had something special inside – 2 black labs. The windows were rolled down maybe 2 inches at the most and the sun roof was cracked. When I drove past the bank it said 91-degrees. I didn’t know what to do, so I wrote the the make, model, and plate number and marched myself back into the store. I got the manager and had the person paged. When this middled aged man showed up towing his two little girls the manager informed him that it was too hot to have the dogs in the car. When he fluffed her off and was going back to his shopping, I stepped in and caused a scene.

The conversation went something like this…

Me – “it’s too hot to have those dogs in the car with the windows nearly rolled up.” “I went by the bank and it said 91-degrees.” “I’m going to call the police.”

At that point whether he believe me or not he mumbled something and headed to the door. I followed him square out of the store into the parking lot.

Stupid man – “And who are you anyway?”

Me – “Me? Concerned citizen that’s who I am!”

Stupid man – “you go call the cops.”

Me – whipping out my cell phone – “hello – 911?” “Yes there are two black labs in the car at the grocery store in the city.” “un-huh the windows are barely rolled down.” “Ok here he is now rolling the windows down and leaving his little girl in the car with the dogs.” By now he is just looking at me. I would like to say stunned and in disbelief.

911 operator – “He’s just leaving the girl in the car? He can’t do that. How old is the girl?”

Me – “I don’t know – Maybe 10 or 11?’

911 operator – “I’m sending over an officer.”

Now the store security guard has come over and I explain the situation to him. He shakes his head of course. Not 3 minutes have now went by and the man comes running out with the other little girl and jumps in the car and takes off. So I call 911 back to let them know and I let the store manager know. Now I just hope someone at the police department has the good common sense to go by this persons house and give them a talking to and let’s also hope I embarrassed him enough he won’t try that stunt again.

  • Way to go you! What is wrong with people anyway? I’m embarrassed to say I have seen this and haven’t been brave enough to make a fuss like you did. Maybe next time I’ll have more courage.

  • Oh my word!!!! I hope they do pass at his place and give him an earfull!!! I can’t believe he put his kid in the car with the dogs, as if that was going to help any!!!
Some people should not be allowed to have kids or animals!!!

  • Boy your tough. I bet those labs would like to live at your house. I bet they’d like to live here too. People are cetainly stupid.

  • I’m proud of you also. It’s important for people to do the right thing and I bet a lot of others would have just let it go or notified the authorities surreptitiously instead of confronting him face to face like that.

  • Go Purl! I am so impressed! I almost busted out someone’s window and stole a dachshund that was left alone in the car while the owner was grocery shopping. GRRRRR….evil people.

  • You go, girl!!! That was way too hot for dogs to be in the car. Unfortnately, if you did that in Massachusetts, it would be only a misdemeanor if it was your own dogs you left in the car. Still, it’s not something to take lighty. Good for you for sticking your neck out to help those dogs.
