Dye Tales

So I got you all up to Saturday of the trip. Well, Sunday we decided to have a dye day at Julie’s – once again thank you for hosting – sorry about the dye accidents on the patio. Whoops. Let’s just say Julie’s DH may never let us over again. Especially when we were really tired and I pulled the last skein out and it didn’t quite totally exhaust – purple dye ran all over the patio. I said “it’s leaking purple” – just stunned like – Julie threw a pie plate underneath and her DH just turned around and looked at us like we lost our minds. Of course this is while he is cooking a special Mother’s dinner and had to suffer in the wool house while we had all the toys out – everywhere. Really we should have gotten a pic. Poor guy. I’m sure he’s still having nightmares. I have to tell you though I did regain some sense and said “I’ll grab the hose,” so at least we may have saved that spot. Anyway I should’ve known better – especially after closer inspection of my basement floor.the-dyes-5-13-2007-11-40-51-am.jpgdsc00868.jpgmore-skeins-5-13-2007-1-51-20-pm.jpg

Anyway great friends came over and we tossed the yarn into the water to soak and away we went. Let’s just say there are many natural dyers and spinners in the group (make sure to also check out Debbi’s blog, who is a total natural and has some great pictures up of the day) and the delightful yarn we produced did not disappoint. After everyone went on their way to celebrate the holiday, we went out for more vinegar and then tried our hand again. Of course we forgot to re-tie the skeins and heck if I didn’t get myself into a pickle. There has been no knitting the last two nights as I have unwound my skein, which I’ll show in cake form tomorrow.

  • The patio incident was much ado about nothing. It took all of two whole minutes to clean it up and he was most impressed. He noticed immediately that I’d cleaned it and was really expecting to hear I’d scrubbed and scrubbed. A toothbrush, a teensy splash of bleach and then a rinse with plenty of water and we’re good to go. Plenty more dyeing shall commence! I can’t wait to see your yarn cake! (By the way, Crystal had a tangle incident with her yarn on the way home. Definitely need more ties next time.)

  • Looks like a good time and fun colors!
Last week I threw out one untied skein of Lorna’s Laces that I overdyed – I worked for HOURS trying to untangle – then flipped and just threw it out! The other one is perfect so I now have enough for 1 sock! I don’t think I’ll make that mistake again!

Isn’t it fun to have a play date and dye stuff? 🙂

Looks like you all had fun! You’ll have to show us the finished skein once it’s dry.

So, what yarn do you use to dye? This looks like sock yarn but I could be wrong.

      It looks gorgeous!!
