Elephant Appreciation Day

Today is Elephant Appreciation day.  I forgot to take my picture of the Saturday sky… kicking myself.  We were up early and headed out to the apple orchard to get our fill of apples.  So far Monsieur Purl has made apple sauce and these lovely delightful creatures.

YUM!!!

Spinning was also in the plan.  I just couldn’t get anymore on this bobbin, so I started number 2.  I think I’m still on schedule to get done for the Secret of the Stole project.

Finally my last surviving grandparent passed away today at 12:15pm.  My maternal grandmother was 93 going to be 94 next month.  She was born on October 10, 1913.  She lived on her own in an assisted living place until last week when she went into the hospital.  Just seems to be old age that got her in the end.  At this point I believe there will be no funeral.

On my maternal side they are not a very close family.  There are 12 siblings in my Mother’s family and an innumerable amount of cousins and 2nd cousins and probably 3rd cousins to me by now, but I couldn’t pick them out in a line up.  My mother is taking it especially hard though, even though it seemed like every encounter they had ended up with my own mother getting mad (and of course me having to hear about it a lot).  So needless to say there is a lot of drama today, as my husband (who is my mother’s favorite) even got yelled at today by her.  I don’t need any condolences, but if you could send a positive thought my way that I make it through the drama, I would appreciate it.

  • Oh wow those apples look good. I have a bag sitting on the counter waiting to become something.

I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother. I’m sure the fact that your mom didn’t get along with her so well makes her passing that much tougher. Hoping she calms down soon. Ah the tangled web of family. Definitely thinking good thoughts for you today.

The spinning looks amazing. I think it will be some weeks yet before I emerge from this deluge of projects and find time for it again myself but I’m halfway through that orange/blue/yellow roving we dyed and that’s what I’ll pick up with.

  • I’m sorry to hear about your grandmother and all the drama. The family on the garrison side is not spectacular either. I like to refer to them as a pack of rabid hyennas. Ah family!

  • Sorry about your grandmother. Your mom is just venting her grief in her own little way. This too shall pass. Hope you received the yarn alright and are getting ready for your class. Will keep good thoughts for you, as always.

  • you know… we (grandma/mom/lil’ me) were in a similar situation… My grandma never forgave my mother for not having been a boy… and then the next thing my mom does is produce a daughter as first grandchild and not a brother. So my mom got all kinds of crap from her mother and I was the verbal punching ball. But even if our relationship was like that, it was a shock and very hard when my mother died…
It is also normal to go through anger before the grief starts. And if they had such a rocky relationship the anger may be present longer…
I’m wishing you loads of strength and try not to take things (too) personally.
