Look Ma, I’m Spinning Lace!!!

I’ve had some sort of block on spinning lace. I don’t know why. I got the hi-speed and super hi-speed whorls plus 3 bobbins for Christmas a couple years ago, but into my crafty room they went – I guess to ponder. I even bought some gorgeous alpaca – here it is

that I guess I’ve also been pondering. I got this alpaca at the NH Sheep and Wool Festival I believe nearly 3 years ago, which I will be lucky enough to be attending this year, to spin into lace. So I know I always had intention to spin lace, so why haven’t I? I don’t know… mental block of some sort. Thinking I probably would screw up this gorgeous alpaca most likely got stuck in my mind. Plus I think I may have gotten a thought it was hard. I really don’t know.

Today I came home by 12pm after a very quick trip to the post office and after lunch and a conversation with Mother where I was talking about my favorite subject – wheels – a production wheel in particular, I realized I don’t believe I had ever spun at that high of a ratio. Well that must’ve got stuck in my mind because I ended up having a very long and fruitful nap where I was dreaming of spinning and wheels. After the nap I felt a bit better and decided that today was the day – I was going to spin lace. Stuffed up head be dammed. So throwing all fear to the wind – realize it was probably the Benedryl talking here – I spun lace. Here it is plyed back on itself over a dime – the penny didn’t photograph well.

Here it is on the bobbin.

Here is Sunshine thinking I’m not looking.

So hopefully I wasn’t on a Benedryl induced low and once my head clears I’ll be able to do this again – and next time it comes out I’ll measure the wpi and let you know.

  • My favorite way to spin. It is turning out wonderfully. Great job! I think it will be a wonderful handspun. Can’t wait to see the FO, and the Knitted FO.
